What can I expect when I come to class?

First and foremost, we don't just do a few stroller lunges and then tickle the toes of our babies, so expect to get your sweat on during every class. You can expect to get a great workout while having fun and meeting a new network of mom-friends!


Each class lasts ~60 minutes and starts with  warm-up that flows into strength training segments and finishes with stretching. A combination of body weight and resistance bands are used for endurance-style strength training which is pivotal for postpartum fitness recovery. Intermittent cardio bursts will keep your heart pounding all the while keeping the kids entertained in the stroller while you exercise. Every class is different so you can attend one or all classes every week without getting bored!


We finish each class with stretching before you head out with your kids and be successful with the rest of your day.


During summer months, we'll take our workouts outside, as long as the weather allows!

What do I need to bring to class?

For you: comfortable exercise clothes and running shoes are a must for any workout! A stroller for your child(ren) is key for these stroller-based workouts. You may also want to bring water, a towel, exercise mat (for core work and stretching).


For your child(ren): a stroller to ride in, a favourite toy, book, water or snack help keep him/her entertained during the class.


When we move our workouts outside, you'll want to include a hat, sunglasses, sun block and other season-appropriate clothing.

Does my child need to stay in the stroller the entire time?

For safety reasons, it is best if your child can stay in their stroller for the entirety of the class. Many children will come out of their strollers at the end of class to stretch their legs (or play at the near by playground!).


HOWEVER, your child comes first and if he/she fusses, needs a diaper change or to be fed, please take the time to tend to their needs and rejoin the class when you're ready.


Often a special toy, snack, drink of water or one of our many interactive songs is enough to keep them entertained during class.

What if my child gets upset during class?

During any given class, at least one child may lose it. It happens. That's life. We get it.


You're in a safe, judgement-free zone with tons of other parents there that have been through the same experience at one point or another.


Take your time, calm your little one, and rejoin the class when you're ready. You've got this. We're here to help.

Do I need a fancy stroller?

Although jogging strollers are a lot of fun and have great maneuverability, you do not need one to participate. Due to the risk of tipping, umbrellas strollers are not appropriate for this class.

I'm a dad, can I come to classes?

Absolutely! Our classes focus on exercises that are complimentary to postpartum fitness recovery and the physical demands of parenting. However, moms, dads, nanny's - we're all care givers and like to get fit while caring for our kids. This supportive environment is great for anyone looking to exercise, meet other caregivers and spend time with their kids.

Do I need to pre-register for these classes?

If this is your first time coming to a Port City Strollers class, it is asked that you notify us prior to attending (info@portcitystrollers.com). 


Once you've registered and selected your class package (drop-in, monthly or seasonal pass), you're free to attend classes whenever you want.


Pre-registration policy subject to change due to class attendance.

How old do my kids need be to bring them?

We recommend that your child be at least 6 weeks old and you've been approved for exercise by your physician.


Older, more mobile tots are also welcome, as long as they are able to spend 45-60 minutes being entertained in a stroller.

I haven't exercised in a while, is Port City Strollers for me?

Port City Strollers is for all levels of fitness. If you're new to the game, returning after a long break (hello pregnancy!) or a regular HIIT expert, this class can be modified for everyone.


If you have any health concerns, it is requested that you participate only under the direction of a physician.


If you are returning to exercise after pregnancy, it is asked that you be a minimum 6-weeks postpartum or approval from your physician.

Are classes indoors or outdoors?

Both!


We try to keep our workouts outside as much as possible. However, living in Halifax, that simply isn't possible all the time. When weather permits, we will be moving outdoors so keep that in mind when dressing yourself (and kids) for class.
